Tank Lakes sit high in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness on the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, a landscape of granite basins, small tarns and jagged peaks in the Cascade Range.

The last light of the day turns the rock faces copper while the lake below is already in shadow — the kind of quiet end-of-day moment the Mountain Serenity theme is built around.

The photograph was taken by Matthew Tharp for the U.S. Forest Service and is in the public domain as a work of the U.S. federal government.
